Good, but don’t count on it occupying anyone for more than a few minutes
Really awesome, works just as advertised. Be sure to pick a sunny spot on a clear day, preferably with little wind for best results. Ensure everything is flat and weighed down. Can be easily done with kids of all ages, but as they get older, they appreciate it more. Probably around the 5 year point would be the lowest I would go on this just because it requires patience and waiting.I know light sensitive paper like this isn’t generally inexpensive, but the kit doesn’t really provide much entertainment for the money. The active parts of the experience are over quite quickly.

    Fun but requires patience
This is very fun and a cool summer activity. I got it for my 5 year old and it was a little time intensive for him because of all the waiting you need to do.You need to make sure that it’s FLAT (this is important or the light will get under the pieces and it will mess them up) and you have the pieces exactly where you want them before you put them in the sun. Even if you’re in the shade when you’re placing the stencils, the sun is still getting to it, and it will make the process begin. I would recommend putting it on something flat inside your house, placing the stencils, then taking it outside and putting it in the sun, being very careful not to move the stencils. Let it sit for the recommended time and then bring it back in, soak it in water (I put the stopper in my sink and let it soak for a little bit) until the colors change. Then you have to wait some more to let it dry before you color it. Which, for a 5-year-old, felt like 10 years. However, when everything was dry, he had a great time coloring on it with the markers provided and putting the googly eyes provided on.It’s a cool little activity, but it definitely needs patience to use.

Great actviity that fuels curiosity and creativity
I did this activity with my little nieces, aged 6 and 9. They loved it and found it mesmerizing. It also fueled their curiosity and creativity in contrast to the screen time they often have. They took the stencils later and used them to trace more shapes on regular paper to create their own booklets and storyboards. It was great to see how one activity sparked a progression of further ideas which I could nurture and encourage. We had a lot of fun.

  7. Lovecraft

Fun sciency activity for family in the sun-seems like magic
This stuff has been around for ages. Naturalists used to make images of plants and leaves using this same kind of technique called cyanotype, and this looks to be it. It’s a lot of fun to use the stencils that come with it, or small toys, blades of grass, leaves, seaweed at the beach etc. Set it in the sun for 10 mins then wash it in water ans watch as the newly formed blue dye coalesces before your eyes when it reacts with the water staining the paper a blueprint color with white silhouettes left behind wherever the sun didn’t shine on the paper. In these days where entertainment for the family is just an occasional movie or board game, it’s great to be able to change things up with something that looks like magic and is creative at the same time.I love this stuff. Get some.Adults, supervise children around this — it’s non-toxic for the most part, but if it’s using what I think it’s using, keep it away from acids like strong vinegar, and don’t burn it.Super fun and easy! Also one of the first books featuring photographs was created from the cyanotypes (like this stuff) of a botanist who made beautiful pictures from seaweeds and plant specimens laid across paper like this and placed in the sun. (Her name was Anna Atkins if you want to learn about her.Lots of fun in the sun, 5 stars!

    Pretty neat-over quickly
Quite neat. Comes with a lot of stencil options: ocean, farm, African savanna. Stencils are sturdy. Some thinner parts did not turn out very well defined but for the most part, animals turned out very identifiable. I’m thinking maybe the surface we were using wasn’t perfectly flat to cause the thin parts to be blurry.Took my kids about 1-2 mins to decide and place items. Then wait for 10 minutes, without touching or moving the stencils! Then “wash.” We put ours face down in a tray of water. You do have to swish or rinse it to get that nice dark blue. Then let it dry (dries quickly in the sun)Very easy to do. My 5 and 7 yr old grasped the concept quickly. Though i wouldn’t necessarily trust them to do it independently without unintentionally ruining the special paper. (The paper is in a light proof bag so only pull one out at a time and only when you are ready to start. The fading is pretty instant so I had my kids make an arrangement first before they placed it on the special paper).I’m not sure what the science component is-might have been nice to have some explanation as to the connection if you want it to be educational. If your child is artistic, they may enjoy coloring the page afterwards. So it won’t keep them occupied for a long time unless they have the patience and diligence to color. But the activity is pretty cool and uncommon.
